The plant is called Senzla in Urdu,Jangli Zeetoon (سینزلہ ،عتمہ جنگلی زیتون ،تنگ برگہ) in  English called Rassion Olive,  Gunir Sheena, and Sarseng in Balti and Sanjit in Persian.
The scientific name of this plant is Elaeagnus angustifolia

Oleaster, also known as Elaeagnus angustifolia, is a deciduous tree or large shrub native to Western and Central Asia. It is commonly referred to as Russian olive, although it is not related to true olives.

The tree can reach up to 7-9 meters (23-30 feet) in height and has narrow, silver-green leaves with a leathery texture. Its fragrant flowers are small and yellowish-white and bloom in early summer. The fruit of the Oleaster is a small, yellow or red berry that is edible but not widely consumed.

Russian olive trees are known for their tolerance to drought, salt, and extreme temperatures, and are commonly planted for erosion control, as a windbreak, and for ornamental purposes. However, they can also be invasive in some areas, outcompeting native vegetation and altering ecosystems. As a result, the planting of Russian olive trees is regulated in certain regions.

Benefits of Oleaster:

Oleaster, or Elaeagnus angustifolia, has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes in various parts of the world. Some of the potential health benefits of Oleaster, supported by scientific research, include:

  1. Antioxidant properties: Oleaster is a rich source of antioxidants, which help to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress, leading to inflammation and a range of chronic diseases. Studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of Oleaster is due to the presence of various phenolic compounds and flavonoids.

  2. Anti-inflammatory effects: Oleaster has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help to alleviate symptoms of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and asthma. The anti-inflammatory activity of Oleaster is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines.

  3. Cardiovascular health: Oleaster may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, and improving blood flow. Studies have shown that the plant's bioactive compounds can help to relax blood vessels, which can lead to a decrease in blood pressure.

  4. Antimicrobial activity: Oleaster has been found to have antimicrobial properties, which may make it effective against a range of bacteria and fungi. This property of Oleaster is attributed to its content of tannins and other bioactive compounds.

  5. Anti-cancer properties: Some studies have suggested that Oleaster may have anti-cancer properties due to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The plant's bioactive compounds have been found to induce cell death and inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells.

Several studies have suggested that Oleaster, or Elaeagnus angustifolia, may have anti-cancer properties. Here are some scientific reasons why:

  1. Induces apoptosis: Oleaster extracts have been found to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancer cells. A study published in the journal "Chemico-Biological Interactions" found that an Oleaster extract caused apoptosis in human colorectal cancer cells by activating a specific cellular pathway.

  2. Inhibits cell proliferation: Oleaster has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells in vitro. A study published in the journal "Food and Chemical Toxicology" found that an Oleaster extract significantly reduced the growth of human cervical cancer cells by inhibiting their ability to divide and form new cells.

  3. Reduces inflammation: Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for cancer development, and Oleaster has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. A study published in the journal "Journal of Medicinal Plants Research" found that an Oleaster extract reduced inflammation in mice with induced liver cancer.

  4. Antioxidant activity: Oleaster is a rich source of antioxidants, which can help to prevent DNA damage and reduce the risk of cancer development. A study published in the journal "Pharmacognosy Magazine" found that an Oleaster extract had significant antioxidant activity, which was attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds.
